Samurai Sword Selection

Why consider a high end Katana?

As a dealer representing the major Japanese sword forges, we are frequently asked what the difference is between a low priced sword and a sword that costs hundreds or even thousands more.

There are many factors that contribute to a high end Japanese sword. Quality of materials, level of detail, blade polish and sharpness, assembly tolerance, balance, and more. Many of these attributes are hard to discern when studying photos online and ultimately leaves one wondering just how much needs to be spent to get a decent sword.

Experienced shoppers realize “you get what you pay for” when purchasing even the most basic knife or tool. Such knowledge will put into perspective the effort and costs involved to hand craft a high quality and complex Japanese sword.

If you are looking for an inexpensive display sword and authenticity or durability is not a priority, than a $100.00 sword will do. Just don’t expect too much in the way of materials quality or fit and finish from swords in this price range.

Practical katanas that will withstand the rigors of regular practice can be had in the $200.00 and up range. These swords are durable but not very ornate or detailed, the money primarily being put into the quality of the blade.

Swords that are functional, sharper and beginning to exhibit authentic details and motifs become available around $400.00. Most of the resources are still being still being put into the blade however more attention is paid to the furniture quality and detail. Saya quality and finish will also be higher at this price level.

At around $1000.00 and up you will find some very nice swords with more than a glimpse of what a high end Japanese sword offers. Blade quality is excellent and the extra hours spent in design and craftsmanship is readily apparent.

Samurai warriors believed that their soul dwelled within their sword and I feel katanas in this price range begin to portray the real spirit of the Samurai sword and exemplify what this hobby is all about.

If you are looking for a high end, heirloom quality sword, I encourage you to consider Thaitsuki. These are the finest Japanese swords currently available and are a relative bargain when you consider they bring a level of quality that provides a lifetime of satisfaction and pride of ownership.
